Have you had chronic tooth pain? Maybe your dentist has mentioned that you need a root canal. These are words that can scare any patient immediately. Perhaps a little explanation will diminish the mystery of root canal treatments and put your mind at ease.

Root canal treatment, known in the dental industry as endodontics (yes, a big scary word!), basically involves a simple and common dental procedure that effectively removes the diseased part of a tooth. Often this procedure can save a damaged or decaying tooth, thereby preventing you from requiring further treatments or interventions, like dentures or bridge work. Worse yet, untreated infections can lead to problems within the jaw bone which could require extensive medical work.

A healthy tooth is filled with pulp, a soft connective tissue filled with nerves and blood vessels. When a tooth becomes decayed or infected, your dentist can often save the tooth by removing the infected or diseased pulp.

Your dentist will basically drill a small hole into your tooth, remove the infected tissue, and probably apply an antibiotic treatment to stop any further infection. Once the diseased pulp is drained, a temporary filling will be used until the tooth is healed. Once healed, a crown or permanent filling will be placed on the damaged tooth and it will be as good as new.

Endodontic treatments can usually be performed fairly quickly, often in one to three visits. These treatments are perfect to combine with a holiday, as the prices abroad for dental treatment are significantly lower than those you’ll find at home. Check out dental tourism companies, such as Dental Care London, when you need your dental work performed. You’ll be smiling again before you know it!

As we all know, toothaches are the result of several different factors. The pain that stems from a toothache is always apparent, normally in the form of throbbing. The pain will normally intensify as time goes by, when you eat, lay down, or drink hot/cold liquids. Toothaches are very painful, and it may seem that no matter what you do – it seems to hurt more.

In the dental world, toothaches can include such things as cavities, infections or abscess in the teeth or gums, debris that has been trapped between the teeth and gums, and trauma to the face, teeth, or the jaw. Sometimes, toothaches can result from medical conditions and have nothing to do with dental. In most cases, if the problem goes without being checked, it can lead to serious trouble and maybe even become a life threatening situation.

Normally, when you have a toothache, you’ll experience tremendous pain. The pain will stem from the affected tooth or the jaw, and you’ll know it almost immediately. It will start out to be a throbbing pain, then continue to get worse and worse until you get it treated. If you wait too long and allow the infection to spread throughout the tooth, you’ll end up having to get it pulled or cut out.

Anytime you start to experience a toothache, you shouldn’t hesitate to make an appointment with your dentist to have it checked. Sometimes, getting an appointment when your tooth starts hurting is easier said than done. Even though you may be able to use certain products to stop the pain, the pain will always come back until you get the problem fixed. A toothache will always come back, until you get the tooth taken care of.

If you visit your dentist in time and he catches the problem early, he may be able to save your tooth. Normally, this will result in a filling, crown, or root canal, although you won’t have to have the tooth removed. Dentists always look to save teeth, as they don’t like to remove a tooth unless they absolutely have to. If the tooth has become abscessed, the dentist will put you on antibiotics such as penicillin until the infection has subsided enough to remove the tooth.

Throughout our lives, most of us will experience the pain and agony of a toothache at some point. A toothache can be the worst pain you have ever felt in your life, especially if you are feeling the pain of an abscess. If you’ve never had a toothache, you should consider yourself lucky. Those who have had toothaches though, will tell you that the pain is something you never want to experience – it will make you feel as if your whole world is falling apart.

By definition, tooth abscess is a localised infection around the tooth that leads to the formation of pus. Abscesses are very serious medical conditions, and can even be life threatening if left untreated. When the pulp of a tooth dies due to damage or decay, bacteria will proliferate from the tissue that is left. These bacteria will eventually spread from the root of the dead tooth into the tissue that is below and create a pocket of pus – the abscess.

Another cause of tooth abcesses is gum disease. Gum diseases causes the gums to pull back and away from teeth, leaving pockets behind. When one of the pockets becomes blocked, the bacteria can multiply and spread, or get backed up. The consequence of this, is that an abscess will start to form under the surface of the gums and become apparent will swelling as it gets bigger and spreads.

After the infection has spread, the jawbone may start to dissolve as it makes room for the swelling and inflammation in the area that has been infected. Once the bone starts to dissolve, the pressure will be greatly decreased, although the infection will still be there. Even though the person will get some relief, the infection will get worse – and the pain will always come back. Once more of the bone has decayed and has dissolved, there will be nothing left to support the tooth, meaning that it will become loose and end up needing to be extracted.

The symptoms and signs of an abscessed tooth are easy to recognised , as they include severe pain in the affected area, red or swollen gums, a bad taste in your mouth, swelling around the area or the jaw, and possibly a high fever. Pain is excruciating with an abscess, normally affecting the area in a bad way. No matter what you do, the pain seems to intensify.

Abscesses tend to occur more with back teeth, although they can happen in the front as well. Once your tooth has become abscessed, your dentist will not immediately pull it. There is some dangers of extracting a tooth that has an abscess since the infection is still present, it can quickly spread. Your dentist will instead prescribe you some antibiotics that can help to destroy the bacteria.

Root canal is a rescue procedure that a dentist may attempt to remove dead or decayed tissue. Last but not least, he can also drill a hole in the tooth to give the infection a chance to drain and try to remove any dead pulp. The most common treatment with an abscess is to use antibiotics to fight the infection, then get the tooth removed. You should never let it get that bad – as an abscess is something that can destroy your jawbone.

If you have suffered a chipped tooth because of an accident, the first thing you should do is have your dentist examine it. He or she can tell you how severe the chip is through dental x-rays. Your dentist will also ask you about pain that may be associated with root damage. If no root damage is present, you have several different choices for tooth repair.

Filing and Dental Bonding

If your chipped tooth is minimally damaged, you may be able to have it filed down until it appears normal. You can also have your imperfect tooth fixed with dental bonding. This procedure uses a composite, tooth-colored resin that is applied to your tooth in a putty-like form and hardened with a curing light. The resin is then filed down to match the look of your natural tooth, and polished to give the material an authentic appearance.

Porcelain Veneers

If your chip is more severe, porcelain veneers may be used to fit over your natural tooth and hide your damage. A porcelain veneer is a thin porcelain shell used to mask any imperfections and restore a healthy, aesthetically pleasing smile. Your chipped tooth will be shaved down and the porcelain veneers placed overtop. The veneer will be bonded directly to your tooth for a durable, natural-looking smile.

Dental Crowns, Inlays and Onlays

If your tooth is badly chipped, or if you experience pain while eating or drinking, you may need a dental crown. A crown “caps” or covers your natural tooth, protecting it and restoring its appearance. Your chipped tooth may also be repaired with a customized inlay or onlay. An inlay is similar to a filling, which is placed inside your tooth’s cusps. An onlay is a more extensive restoration and is placed on top of your tooth to cover and protect one or multiple cusps. An onlay is recommended when you need more protection and tooth preservation than a crown can provide.

Tooth Extraction

If your chipped tooth is more badly damaged than you originally thought, you may be advised to have that tooth removed. If your tooth requires removal, you can replace it with a dental bridge or a dental implant. A bridge is made up of two crowns that are placed on the teeth to either side of the empty space. The crowns on these adjacent teeth are then used to hold a fake tooth in place.

A dental implant is another option for tooth replacement. It is a small, sturdy, titanium peg that acts as the root structure for a fake tooth. The implant is surgically placed into your upper or lower jaw bone. Once your bone has grown around the metal post, it can be used to hold in place a crown, bridge or denture.

Do Not Ignore Your Chipped Tooth

If you have suffered an injury to your mouth, and one of your teeth was chipped as a result, you should see a dentist as soon as possible. Your dental professional can assess your condition and recommend the best course of action to fix your chip. Occasionally, a tooth that has severely broken off can be repaired if addressed immediately, so be sure to take any piece(s) with you to the dentist. Waiting to seek treatment will only negatively impact your mouth, as it increases the chance of further deterioration from any unseen damage.

Fractures are a common thing in the world of dentistry. Fractures or cracks occur with all ages, although they are more present in those above the age of 25. They can be very painful, hard to diagnose, yet sometimes easy to treat. There are several types of fractures, which we will look at below.

The first type of crack is known as an oblique supragingival fracture. This fracture is found above the gums, and normally happens when you bite down too hard on something. Normally, this fracture doesn’t involve the nerve. Once the fractured area of the tooth breaks off, the pain will go away. Although the exposed dentin may cause you some pain, you can visit the dentist and have it repaired. If the fracture is large, you may need to have a crown placed on the tooth to prevent further fractures from occurring in that tooth.

The second type of crack exceeds way below the gum line, and is known as an oblique subgingival fracture. Once the fractured piece of tooth breaks off, it normally remains attached to the gums and cause result in terrible pain until you get it removed. Once you have had the piece of tooth removed from the gums, the tooth will be similar to the supragingival fracture. It normally doesn’t affect the nerves, although as a result of the tooth area being lost, you may need to have a root canal to clean out the tooth before having a crown put on it.

The seriousness of this fracture depends on how far it has went beyond the gum line. If it has made it’s way deep into the gum line, you may not be able to save the tooth. The crack can be present for many years, before you start to feel any pain. To be on the safe side, you should go to your regular checkups with your dentist, as he can check for cracks and other problems.

The oblique root fracture is next, although it doesn’t involve the tooth crown at all. This type of fracture is almost always found below the gums, normally under the bone. If a root fracture is found near the crown of the tooth, it will normally prove to be fatal. Sometimes, you can save the tooth with a root canal, even though it is normally lost later on due to an abscess of the bone that surrounds the fracture.

The last type of fracture is the most difficult to deal with. Vertical apical root fractures occur with the tip of the root, and can cause you severe to intense pain, even if you’ve had the nerve removed with a root canal. Even though the nerve may not be present, vertical apical root fractures cause a lot of pain, which occurs in the tooth.

Normally, vertical apical fractures will cause you more pain than any other type of fracture. The resulting pain comes from the fragments putting pressure on the bone, causing the fractured pieces to strain. Just about the only way to get relief from this type of fracture is to get a root canal, as it will ease the pain and get the dead pulp out of the tooth that’s affected with the fracture.

Even though fractures are very common and very painful, you should never put off going to the dentist. Fractures can become more and more serious if you don’t do something about them, which is why you should never hesitate to go to the dentist. Your dentist will be able to diagnose the problem, and fix it before it has the chance to get any worse.

The mouth is inhabited by microorganisms. Microorganisms are transporting the food, especially sugary acid. The acid residues of food, saliva and microorganisms cooperate in the creation of dental plaque. If the plaque remained glued to the tooth and is not removed, then picks up salts, harden. The acids in plaque leading to the creation and decay. The caries destroys the enamel of the tooth – the outer substance of the tooth – and creating wells, holes in the tooth.

Symptoms of dental caries and gingivitis :
1. Toothache – especially after a hot or cold
2. Visible cavities in the tooth
3. Bleeding gums when cleaning teeth or automatically
4. Increased mobility of teeth due to the dissolution of the bone

Prevention – Tips
Good oral hygiene is the main weapon against tooth decay and gum disease. This means proper brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day. Foods that stick to teeth like nuts or candies are best taken with a meal. A continuous like chewing food, leading to continuous production of acids in the mouth. If possible after receipt of such foods, regular brushing teeth or rinsing with water.
An important preventive measure against dental caries is the use of “obstructive holes and cracks” of the so-called sealants. The sealant can be applied to children soon after the suspension of the back teeth. The sealants are minute’s entrapment material covering the surface points of back teeth that are prone to decay, as well as surface cracking of the tooth.
Intake of fluoride also helps prevent against tooth decay. Fluoride incorporated into the tooth and makes the tooth enamel more resistant to acids. The fluoride contained in toothpaste or mouthwash.

Treatment
One does not restore a damaged tooth itself.
The evolution of the disaster, but through the decay can be halted. At this point it is necessary to visit the dentist. The dentist will remove caries with a wheel or laser. The laser is simply light high power. The application in connection with the wheel especially suited to children, stressful patients and elderly patients.
After removing the decay, the remaining surface of the tooth is amended appropriately to accept the so-called sealing of the tooth.
If tooth decay is very advanced it is recommended to cover the tooth with a crown.
In the case of pulp necrosis of dental caries is no longer able to endodontic treatment, the so-called root canal treatment. At this point needed to clean the root canal of the tooth, removing both vessels, and nerves of the tooth.
As a rule needs to be placed on this tooth crown. This may stabilize the weakened tooth in the window.

Other reasons that increase the risk of gum disease are:
* pregnancy
* uncontrolled diabetes
* Smoking
* anxiety
* inadequate nutrition
* effects of various drugs
* uneven and crooked teeth
* age.

The Symptoms of gingivitis include:
* Redness and swelling of the gums
* Easy bleeding gums, especially in brushing.

Warning signs of gum disease:
1. Red, irritated, swollen scar that cause pain locally or elsewhere in the mouth
2. Bleeding from the scar after brushing or cleaning the teeth with floss or after eating hard food
3. Receding gums away from the teeth making them to look farther than before
4. Laxity or separation of teeth
5. Presence of pus in the teeth or scar
6. Mouth ulcers
7. Constant bad breath mouth
8. Change the ways in which contact the teeth when the patient bites
9. Lesions in the application of artificial dentures

The term ‘Endodontic’ comes from the Greek language and literally means ‘inside-tooth’; it is one of the nine specialties of dentistry as recognized by dental associations worldwide. Endodontic treatment deals not with the teeth, but with ‘tooth pulp’ – the soft fleshy substance within the teeth.

Tooth pulp is the pulpy flesh and tissues around the root of teeth. The pulp is made up of nerves, arterioles (small blood vessels), venules (small blood vessels which bunch together to form veins and remove deoxygenated blood from the body) and tissue (lymphatic and fibrous). There are many problems that can potentially occur within the pulp. If the pulp does get diseased, endodontic surgery is necessary to save the affected tooth. The following treatments are usually conducted under this particular area of dentistry;

Endodontic Therapy: Getting a ‘Root Canal’

A ‘root canal’ is the name given to the space which is naturally found within the root of the tooth. This ‘canal’ consists of the pulp chamber and the intricate branches which connect the root canals of all he teeth with each other and with the surface of the roots – this space is filled with the dental pulp discussed above.

A root canal treatment is actually referred to correctly as ‘Endodontic therapy‘ and it is divided into a sequence of procedures which remove infection, relieve pain and prevent the occurrence of future infection in the decontaminated areas of the pulp and corresponding tooth. Traditionally, root canal treatment is associated with a high level of pain and most people are fearful of it, hence many people use the analogy “I’d rather get a root canal!” when associating with something highly unpleasant however this assumption is incorrect as this treatment is now relatively painless – the pain can easily be managed and modern procedures cut both the recovery time and the chances of future infection. The term ‘getting a root canal’ refers to a root-canal treatment.

Root canal treatment procedures: There are several procedures involved with endodontic therapy. This therapy is usually required when a microbial infection is already present within the tooth-pulp or if the tooth is considered to be under threat of such an infection (due to cracking or decay etc). In such a case, dentists recommend a pulpectomy; the process by which the infected pulp of the tooth is removed – the dentist drills into the tooth, removes the pulp, cleans and fills the cavity inert material (which prevents infection and does not cause any harm to the body) and seals the opening, sometimes with a ‘crown’ if the tooth is damaged due to infection. A Pulpotomy procedure, or ‘vital pulp therapy’, is the process of focusing on all the vital healthy pulp and removing the only the dead/ infected pulp in order to conserve the healthy parts. This procedure is usually undertaken for primary teeth (it costs less and requires less time than a complete root-canal therapy).

‘Root-end’ surgery (Apicoectomy)

In case a root canal treatment fails, and when a follow-up root-canal procedure is not advisable due to any reason, a root-end surgery can be used to save the tooth and remove the spreading infection. In this type of procedure, the root-tip of the affected tooth is removed and the root-end cavity is disinfected, filled with an inert material and then sealed.
